Everything You Should Know About How Turbine Cut Garden Shredders Work
Turbine Cut Garden Shredders are Bosch’s answer to efficiently dealing with both woody and soft garden cuttings.
The Bosch AXT 25TC is Bosch’s flagship electric garden shredder. It uses a ‘turbine cutting’ system that is meant to be equally at home shredding soft stemmed, green waste as it is shredding bigger, tougher, woody branches.
But is it any good?
Well for the full answer you will have to go over and take a look at our full Bosch AXT 25TC review.
However, the short answer is ‘yes’
Turbine Cut System
Bosch appear to have borrowed the idea for their Turbine Cut shredders from older, cylinder cut lawnmowers. A cylinder mower has a fixed, horizontal cutting blade. The spinning cylinder blades move the grass over the cutting blade, and using a scissor action between the fixed and spinning blades, the grass is cut.

The similarity to Bosch’s TC system is clear. Bosch have just had to make some modifications to allow for the force needed to cut wood up to 45mm diameter.
With the turbine cutting system there is practically no chance of green waste clogging or stopping the cutter. With 8 blades there is no real chance of woody waste jamming the machine either so it does seem that Bosch have created a shredder which will cope with all types of garden plant waste.
As the Turbine (?) rotates, the blades push larger clippings against the side plate much as with the crushing cog teeth in the quiet shredders. The design of the turbine blades is that they cut more than crush.
As turbine continues to rotate it pulls the clippings through the shredder until it eventually cuts through and the shredding drops out.
This is a much cleaner cutting mechanism that the quiet shredders employ but has all of the benefits for cutting large, tough woody waste.
Smaller clipping drop down between the turbine blades to be cut off either at the top or at the bottom of the turbine. Small, thin twigs would have to be moving fast if they were not to be caught in the mechanism. It makes for a very efficient shredding experience.
There is practically no jamming so the AXT25TC does a great job on both tough,. woody clippings while being just as happy dealing with smaller, softer waste.
The 25TC has a bigger appetite and can cope with branches upto 45mm. At close to 2in in diameter (for those who have difficulty visualising in millimetres) that is a pretty hefty hunk of wood. You will need heavy duty tree loppers and/or pruning saw to cut branches up to the maximum capacity of the AXT25TC.
At 82dB these are quiet machines so you shouldn’t disturb your neighbours either.
The not so good?
These things are expensive – half as much again as a similar quiet shredder. They are heavy too so they are not that easy to drag around your garden.
That’s about it really – there aren’t any major gripes.
Oh, perhaps we should mention that if you are unlucky enough to need to change the cutter it is going to cost you something North of £150. That said, a Bosch Turbine Cut Electric Shredder will last you for many years.
I want one
- The AXT 25 TC quiet shredder - the first universal shredder for both soft and hard materials
- High torque high-performance 2500 W motor
- Patented "Block Release System" allows blockages to be loosened easily without the need to remove the hopper
- Effortlessly shreds woody materials up to a maximum diameter of 45 mm thanks to extremely high torque of 650 Nm
The Bosch AXT25TC is our shredder of the year 2020
As we have said earlier – there is really nothing else quite like the AXT 25TC. In this case, we have no electric alternatives for you to consider.
If you need something more powerful you will need to look at petrol garden shredders.
